College Grads Flock to Charlotte's South End Neighborhood
Charlotte's South End neighborhood is becoming a hotspot for recent college graduates, who are drawn to its vibrant nightlife and walkability. Regina Prieto, a SCAD graduate, moved to Charlotte four weeks ago for a job at Honeywell and says she loves the area's 'big-city vibe' combined with a more relaxed atmosphere.
The influx of young people is being driven by companies such as Bank of America, which has recruited around 400 full-time employees from campuses this summer. Duke Energy also plans to hire over 100 college graduates in the Charlotte area between May and September.
According to data from the Charlotte Center City Partners, South End and Uptown gained roughly 1,900 residents in a year who fit the demographic groups known as 'young city solos' and 'singles and starters.' This represents about half of the roughly 23,000 people living in South End.
While the trend is promising, some experts caution that the national job market is facing challenges, particularly for workers with college degrees. AI is also threatening certain roles, and Charlotte's rapid growth has raised concerns about affordability.
