COMAC's C919 Completes First International Flight, Faces Challenges Ahead
China's COMAC has marked an important milestone in its aviation industry development as one of its C919 passenger airliners completed its first regular international flight. The aircraft, operated by Air China, took off from Beijing and landed approximately two hours later in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The C919 is a narrow-body passenger aircraft designed to carry up to 174 passengers and is similar to the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo. However, it still relies heavily on foreign components and has not yet received certification from major aviation regulators in Europe and the USA.
COMAC initially planned to switch to Chinese components by 2025 and capture about 10% of China's domestic aviation market. However, this goal may not be achievable within the specified timeframe.
The Beijing-Ulaanbaatar flight is part of a gradual development plan that could lead to daily flights in the future. COMAC is also showcasing its C919 at international airshows and has delivered 40 aircraft so far, with plans to increase production to 200 units annually by 2029.
