COMAC's C919 Takes to International Skies
China's COMAC has made significant progress in its quest to rival Boeing and Airbus. The state-owned company's C919 airliner has completed its first international flight, flying from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. This marks an important milestone for the Chinese aviation industry, which is seeking to reduce its reliance on foreign manufacturers.
The C919 is a narrow-body passenger aircraft designed to carry up to 174 passengers. While it's comparable to the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo, the Chinese airliner still uses a significant number of foreign components. This limits its operational and sales capabilities in Western markets.
COMAC has faced challenges in meeting its goals for switching to Chinese components by 2025 and capturing 10% of China's domestic aviation market. However, the company is actively showcasing the C919 at international airshows and plans to gradually increase production to 200 airliners annually by 2029.
