The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace is accelerating rapidly, presenting both opportunities and challenges for businesses. According to Harvard Business School Associate Professor Iavor Bojinov, companies are adopting AI at different rates, with some taking a slow and methodical approach while others dive right in.

Bojinov has written eight case studies on companies' approaches to AI, including Procter & Gamble (P&G), Microsoft, and Whoz. He notes that the key to successful AI adoption is building trust among employees, which requires creating three layers of trust: trusting the algorithm and AI, trusting the developers, and knowing what to do when things go wrong.

Bojinov recommends that companies identify the specific challenges they face in adopting AI and address them directly. He also suggests encouraging employees to scrutinize AI's output, learn from companies taking bold steps, and ask employees to set aside time to experiment with AI tools.

Microsoft's sales organization is a notable example of successful AI adoption, with 22-25% of employees initially adopting Copilot before its use dropped to 5%. Bojinov notes that this highlights the importance of building trust in AI among employees and creating a supportive environment for experimentation.
