Cook Outshines Nadella in Key Metrics, But Microsoft CEO's Cloud Growth May Soon Catch Up
Two of the world's most prominent CEOs, Tim Cook and Satya Nadella, have been compared in terms of their performance. The analysis focuses on operational metrics such as return on invested capital (ROIC), return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), operating margin, and debt-to-equity ratio.
The study found that Apple's Cook outperforms Microsoft's Nadella in ROIC, ROE, and ROA. However, Nadella excels in operating margin at 46.8%, compared to Apple's 32%. The analysis also notes that Apple's high return on equity is influenced by its significant buyback program, which has reduced its equity base.
Cook's performance is attributed to his successful management of a mature consumer hardware business with a services component. In contrast, Nadella's achievement is largely driven by the growth of Microsoft's cloud business, including Azure and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
The study concludes that Cook leads in three out of four metrics, including ROIC, but notes that Nadella's operating margin advantage is significant and may change if Microsoft's backlog converts to revenue at current cloud margins.
