Costa Rican Mother's Home Built with Recycled Plastic Blocks
Cindy Mora, a working single mother from Costa Rica's Lámparas neighborhood, had been saving for nine years to secure a plot of land. She finally achieved her dream on May 26, 2018, when she received the keys to her new home in Alajuelita.
The home was built using 850 blocks made from recycled plastic, a project involving Procter & Gamble, Urbarium, Habitat for Humanity, and Ekojunto. The partnership used around seven tons of discarded plastic to build the walls of Mora's fixed home structure.
Contrary to initial reports stating that 800 volunteers pitched in, records indicate more than 800 hours of volunteer labor were donated by P&G employees and other groups. This clarification changes the story but not the accomplishment.
