Costco Stock Due for Correction Despite Strong Earnings Growth
Costco's stock has been performing remarkably well, but according to financial analysts at 24/7 Wall St., it may be due for a correction. The company's latest quarterly earnings report showed impressive growth, with revenue up 11.58% year over year and net income rising 15.19%. Membership fee income is growing at a rate of 10.7% to 14.0%, while e-commerce traffic surged 37% last quarter.
The analysts' price target for Costco's stock (NASDAQ:COST) stands at $1,022.62, representing a modest 7.33% upside from its current price of $952.75. However, the bear case takes COST to $942.73, a 1.05% loss, citing valuation concerns and potential risks such as tariff pressure, FX volatility, and rising wages.
Costco's premium pricing is justified by its strong fundamentals and membership model, which offers a subscription-based moat in retail. The company's 29.1% return on equity also suggests that reinvestment is earning its keep, despite heavy capital expenditures on warehouses and distribution. In comparison to Walmart (NYSE:WMT) and BJ's Wholesale Club (NYSE:BJ), Costco's revenue growth is nearly twice as fast, supporting the premium valuation.
