Tillis' journey began when he won a local talent show at the age of 16 after learning to play drums and guitar. His classmates had predicted that he and his brother Richard would one day become 'hillbilly music' stars.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Tillis headed to Nashville in 1957 to pursue a career in country music. He began pitching songs around Music City, and his first success came when Webb Pierce reached number three on the country songs chart with 'I'm Tired,' a song Tillis had written while watering strawberry plants in Florida.

Tillis' own recording career took off in the 1970s, with hits like 'Good Woman Blues' (1976), 'Coca-Cola Cowboy' (1979), and 'I Ain't Never' (1972). He was also a prolific songwriter, penning hits for artists like Kenny Rogers and Ray Price.
