Cramer Abandons Bitcoin Amid Quantum Computing Threat
Financial news anchor Jim Cramer has announced his intention to exit his entire Bitcoin position due to concerns about the threat of quantum computers compromising the cryptocurrency's security within three years. This decision was prompted by a warning from IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, who cautioned investors about the rapidly approaching threat of quantum computing. According to recent estimates, roughly 30% of the total Bitcoin supply is at risk, with approximately 6 million to 7 million BTC potentially vulnerable to attack.
The vulnerability in question affects addresses that have publicly revealed their keys through repeated use or older wallet formats. While the development of reliable logical qubits is a key hurdle for quantum computing advancements, IBM's demonstrations involving tens of logical qubits showcase progress. However, many conservative researchers predict a cryptographically relevant machine will not arrive until the 2030s or even 2040s, positioning Cramer's three-year prediction as aggressive.
Cramer's decision to exit his Bitcoin position has sparked a market reaction, with crypto users flooding social media posts celebrating his move instead of fearing it. This phenomenon is known as 'inverse Cramer', where the market often treats his predictions as contrarian signals. Meanwhile, Strategy, the company formerly known as Microstrategy, disclosed the sale of approximately 1,638 BTC earlier that day.
