Credit Unions Must Balance Trust and Innovation in Payments Landscape
The Defense Credit Union Council's (DCUC) Annual Conference in Aventura, Florida brought together experts to discuss the rapidly evolving payments landscape. The panel 'Payments at an Inflection Point: Policy, Innovation & Member Trust' featured Pace Bradshaw, Visa's senior vice president and head of North America government affairs, and Maria Martinez, president and CEO of $270-million Border FCU in Del Rio, Texas.
The discussion centered around the growing importance of trust in payments. According to Stverak, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer, 'members will embrace innovation only if credit unions continue to earn their trust.' Bradshaw emphasized that the payments industry is experiencing unprecedented change driven by artificial intelligence, digital assets, and political developments.
The panelists agreed that credit unions must remain focused on member needs rather than chasing every new technology. Martinez noted that her Texas-based credit union serves members along the U.S.-Mexico border and at Laughlin Air Force Base, where they are becoming increasingly sophisticated in using AI to research regulations and fraud rights.
Stablecoins emerged as a key theme, with Bradshaw suggesting they could become an important tool for cross-border payments and business settlement. The panelists also cautioned against losing the human element in payments innovation, emphasizing that trust remains the foundation of successful credit unions.
