CUDA Dominance: Why Nvidia Leads AMD in AI Market
Nvidia's CUDA software ecosystem gives it a significant advantage over AMD in the AI market. With six million developers locked into its platform, Nvidia has created a switching cost that makes it difficult for customers to switch to AMD's ROCm ecosystem. This is reflected in Nvidia's 75% gross margins and 99.7% return on equity, compared to AMD's expected Q3 non-GAAP gross margin of 56%.
Nvidia's revenue has grown significantly, reaching $96.2 billion in fiscal Q2 2027, up 106% year over year. In contrast, AMD reported $11.5 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 50%. Nvidia's data center revenue is also impressive, with a growth rate of 117%, compared to AMD's 40%.
While AMD has made strides in closing the inference gap with its ROCm version 7, it still trails Nvidia on large-scale distributed training. Additionally, some high-performance kernels remain CUDA-only, and independent testing shows that AMD converts a lower fraction of theoretical peak performance into delivered work.
