Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Ends, Restaurant Stocks Bounce Back
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by contaminated lettuce imported from Mexico, is officially over. The largest ever outbreak in the US resulted in 12,833 people getting sick across 21 states, with two fatalities recorded in Michigan.
The CDC linked the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by a distributor in Mexico. Restaurants affected included Taco Bell locations, which saw lower sales due to the outbreak.
Others in the industry, such as Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and McDonald's (MCD), also benefited from the news, with their stock prices rising as investors breathed a sigh of relief.
