Darren Sissons' Top Picks for August: A Shift Toward AI Exposures
Darren Sissons, partner and portfolio manager at Campbell, Lee & Ross Investment Management, shared his outlook on global and technology stocks. Two significant developments in the quarter were declining inflationary pressure and generally positive corporate results.
The decline in inflation was driven by falling oil prices, largely due to increased Russian and U.S. crude exports and strategic reserve drawdowns by China. Corporate reporting trends were broadly positive or in line with guidance.
Consumer-related indicators remained constructive, with Visa continuing to report double-digit growth metrics, indicating resilient consumer activity. New York City rents rose to a median of US$5,000 per month, supporting the market heuristic that financial stress is less acute when Wall Street grows.
A rotation out of Magnificent 7 (MAG7) names and into artificial intelligence (AI) exposures and other growth segments was observed, although this shift is not visible at the index level. The perceived non-AI-exposed MAG7 names Meta Platforms Inc and Microsoft Corporation declined 28.95 per cent and 6.85 per cent, respectively, while Tesla Inc. posted a 3.55 per cent gain.
Looking ahead, investors who added exposure to names facing excessive AI pessimism performed strongly this quarter, as did oil, select pharmaceuticals, and medical-technology tools.
