Data Center Dilemma: 10-15% of US Projects at Risk Amid Growing Political Backlash
Dan Ives, partner at Yorkville Investments, is sounding the alarm on the growing threat of political backlash against data center buildouts in the United States. As the country's tech revolution continues to gain momentum, Ives warns that an estimated 10-15% of proposed US data centers could be cut due to community pushback and local zoning issues.
Ives made his remarks after a tour of Midwest infrastructure sites, where he observed significant investments from tech giants like Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). He noted that these facilities serve as the 'hearts and lungs' of the AI buildout, with between 1,000 to 1,500 data centers currently in motion across the US.
However, protests are escalating, particularly in Austin, Texas, where protesters are demanding moratoriums. A $100 billion project in Virginia was recently scrapped, further exacerbating concerns. Ives predicts that local zoning and tech expansions will become deeply politicized as the nation approaches the midterm elections.
