Data Centers Face Backlash Over Noise and Pollution Concerns

Microsoft and xAI data centers are facing growing complaints from nearby residents who claim that their facilities are causing noise, vibration, and air pollution. The allegations have led to lawsuits in Wisconsin and Mississippi, with at least six similar cases filed this year.

The dispute centers around the measurement of low-frequency noise, which can be difficult to detect using standard dBA equipment. Residents argue that Microsoft could have reduced the disturbance through acoustic barriers, quieter cooling equipment, soundproofing, and improved monitoring.

xAI is also facing claims involving turbines and pollution at its Southaven data center in Mississippi. The company has been accused of failing to take meaningful action to address the alleged effects, with attorneys representing residents stating that xAI has made no effort to halt the harm.
