Dean Tells Gen Z Not to Master AI, Emphasizes Strategic Thinking
Jeff Dean, former chief scientist at Google and co-founder of AI startup DiscoveryLoop, has offered advice to Gen Z students on how to navigate the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. After leaving his position at Google after 27 years, Dean spoke at the 2026 Frontier & Pioneer Symposium about the importance of thinking across disciplines and managing time strategically.
Dean emphasized that it's not necessary for students to have a deep understanding of AI in order to succeed in today's job market. Instead, he recommends skimming the abstracts of 100 papers in order to connect important ideas that haven't yet been connected.
While some experts are warning about the potential risks of AI, including job replacement and wealth concentration, Dean remains optimistic about its broader social value. He sees AI as a tool for expanding what people can accomplish, rather than automating routine work or cutting costs.
