Dean Unveils Discovery Loop: A New Venture to Automate Scientific Research with AI

Jeff Dean, a renowned AI expert who spent 27 years at Google, has left the company to start his own venture, Discovery Loop. Just hours after announcing his departure, he unveiled the mission of his new company: to automate scientific research and engineering innovation using artificial intelligence.

In an August 7, 2026, appearance at Stanford University's Asian American Pioneer Medal Symposium, Dean discussed his technical legacy and vision for Discovery Loop. He emphasized that his goal is not to train the next larger model but to use AI to accelerate human discovery.

Dean outlined the key technical legacies from his time at Google, including MoE (Mixture of Experts), TensorFlow, and Gemini. He explained that MoE's architecture, which has been adopted by nearly all frontier large models, was inspired by a simple intuition: models need enormous capacity to learn and memorize information but don't need to activate all parameters during every inference.

Dean also reflected on his work with TensorFlow, the machine learning framework he spearheaded. He noted that its greatest success was providing a unified abstraction for researchers worldwide and making research results truly reproducible through open-source code.
