Deceptive Apps Flood Google Play Store Through Exploited Early Access Program

Google's Early Access program has been exploited by threat actors to push thousands of deceptive Android apps onto users. These apps, which can't be reviewed or rated, promise cash rewards, casino winnings, and premium content but often serve ads after ad.

The apps are masquerading as casual slot and puzzle games, and are aggressively promoted via ads on social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook. To avoid regulatory requirements, these apps claim to offer services unrelated to gaming, such as PDF readers or QR scanners.

One identified app, 'Vice Streets: Open World', was an imitator of Grand Theft Auto with over 1 million downloads before being removed from the Google Play Store. Bitdefender notes that users can't leave reviews for Early Access apps, which removes a key warning sign and allows these deceptive apps to gain traction.
