DeepMind Maps All Possible Human DNA Changes with AlphaGenome Atlas
Google's DeepMind research unit has made a significant breakthrough in genetics research by predicting the biological consequences of all possible human DNA changes. Using its AlphaGenome artificial intelligence model, DeepMind was able to predict the impact of over 9 billion single-letter changes to human DNA.
The resulting database, called the AlphaGenome Atlas, contains over 1 petabyte of data and is about 30 times larger than Google's AlphaFold database. This massive resource will help researchers dramatically speed up genetic research by providing a precomputed catalogue of how each substitution of a single DNA base is likely to impact gene expression.
DeepMind is making the Atlas available for free to non-commercial researchers through a web portal, and later it will also be offered as a commercial service via Google Cloud. This will allow researchers to explore the predictions in a browser-based interface, making it much easier to access than before.
