Deliberate Deployment Trumps Speed in AI Agent ROI
A new study of 2,025 agentic AI leaders reveals that being first to deploy AI agents doesn't necessarily mean being first to see returns on investment. In fact, professional and business services were among the slowest sectors to adopt AI agents but achieved meaningful ROI in just 6.5 months.
According to Salesforce's State of Agentic AI in the Enterprise report, clean, accessible data; narrowly defined agent scope; and human escalation paths established in advance are the prime determinants of success.
The study found that companies deploying AI agents for the first time averaged eight months to reach meaningful ROI, with strong adoption and customer satisfaction gains. However, those that unified their relevant data before launching AI agents achieved ROI sooner than those who deployed agents first then addressed data infrastructure gaps afterward - 7.3 months versus 8.8.
The report highlights that operational factors, not pace, are most predictive of success. Shibani Ahuja, SVP of Data & AI Strategy at Salesforce, notes that 'the advantage was never in starting first; it's in starting deliberately.'
