Delta Flight Diversions After Captain Falls Ill Mid-Flight
A Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to Boston made an emergency diversion to Detroit after its captain became ill mid-flight and requested hospital treatment.
The Boeing 757 was carrying 147 passengers when the medical issue developed on Tuesday. Despite being unwell, the captain remained able to communicate with air traffic control and taxi the aircraft to the gate before leaving for the hospital.
According to Matthew 'Whiz' Buckley, a former military and commercial pilot, this scenario is consistent with normal cockpit workload management, where one pilot handles radio communications while the other focuses on flying the plane.
A replacement crew was arranged in Detroit, allowing the aircraft to continue its journey to Boston. Delta apologized for the disruption caused by the unscheduled stop.
