Delta Flight Diverted from Iceland to Lisbon After Mechanical Issue

A Delta Air Lines flight from Dublin to Lisbon took an unexpected detour over the North Atlantic on August 3, due to a mechanical issue.

The Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, registration N180DN, departed two hours behind schedule at 5:10 PM local time and reached its cruising altitude of 34,000 feet before the crew identified the technical problem.

Initially, the flight plan was to divert to Keflavík International Airport in Iceland, but due to the aircraft's specific mechanical failure, it required a warmer ground climate, ruling out Iceland. The crew decided to redirect the aircraft hundreds of miles south toward Lisbon instead.

The flight landed safely at Lisbon Airport more than six hours after departing Dublin, with passengers disembarking and the remainder of the flight canceled for the evening.
