Diet Coke's Unlikely Gifting Moment: A Rakhi Twist on Familiar Branding
Diet Coke has made its presence felt in India's Raksha Bandhan celebrations this year. The beverage brand has been turned into Rakhi-themed merchandise, with several Indian retailers selling Diet Coke-inspired Rakhis. These unique gifts have caught the attention of consumers and marketers alike, offering a new way to connect with the festival.
The idea is notable from a marketing perspective as it takes a familiar brand identity and places it directly into a festive product category. This approach allows beverage brands like Diet Coke to enter a festive conversation through physical products rather than relying solely on seasonal advertising. The Rakhi becomes a small piece of merchandise that can be purchased, gifted, and worn, giving the brand a presence in a completely different category.
The timing also comes as Diet Coke has received considerable attention in India this year for reasons extending beyond its usual beverage market. In July, disruptions to aluminium can supplies linked to the Iran conflict had affected Diet Coke's supply chain in India, leading Coca-Cola to shift to larger 330 ml cans imported from Southeast Asia.
