Digital IDs Arrive on Google Wallet, Expanding Mobile Convenience
Google Wallet has been expanding its support for digital IDs on Android devices, allowing users to store and use their state-issued driver's licenses or ID cards within the app.
The feature is currently available in several US states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. Users can add their state ID by taking a photo of the front and back of the physical card, as well as a short video for verification.
The digital ID can be used at TSA checkpoints in some US airports, where users can tap their phone or scan a QR code to authenticate. Some apps, such as those from car rental services, are also beginning to accept digital IDs for identity and age verification.
Google is working on expanding the use of digital IDs beyond just TSA checkpoints and age verification, with plans to allow users to recover Amazon accounts, access online health services, and verify profiles on platforms like Uber.
