Dimon Slams Middle Powers Plan as 'Fantasy' Amid Escalating US-Canada Trade Tensions
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon dismissed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's plan for a coalition of 'middle powers' as a 'fantasy', citing Europe's economic decline as evidence. In June, Dimon spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations' CEO Speaker Series and argued that similar attempts to create middle power coalitions have already been tried in Europe.
'They did that; it's called Europe,' Dimon said, pointing out that Europe's GDP has fallen from 90% of America's to 70%. He attributed the decline to high taxes, burdensome regulation, and weak capital formation, describing the region as 'anti-business' and warning of further erosion.
Dimon also highlighted the significant capital flows from Europe to the US, with US capital markets standing at nearly $70 trillion compared to European exchanges. He suggested that rather than creating new geopolitical blocs, Europe should focus on building a genuine common market and adopting policies that drive economic growth.
