Dimon Sounds Alarm on Market Leverage
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has issued a warning about the elevated levels of leverage in financial markets, stating that it increases the risk of sharp market reversals.
Dimon noted that margin debt is at its highest level ever, and many forms of leverage are not captured in traditional statistics. He emphasized that when investors use borrowed funds to purchase securities, they increase their potential losses as well as gains.
The warning comes amid a backdrop of rising asset prices and aggressive borrowing, particularly in the technology sector. Dimon stopped short of predicting an imminent financial crisis but acknowledged that the current level of leverage makes markets more susceptible to rapid selloffs if investor sentiment shifts unexpectedly.
