Discovery Loop Seeks $50 Billion Valuation as Investors Bet on Pedigree
Jeff Dean, former chief scientist at Google, is leading a new AI startup called Discovery Loop in pursuit of a $50 billion valuation. This is a fivefold increase from their initial target of $10 billion just weeks earlier.
Dean co-founded the startup with fellow ex-Google researchers Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, who all resigned from Google on August 5, 2026. The team's experience is impressive, having designed key components of Google's AI infrastructure, including MapReduce and Bigtable.
Discovery Loop aims to automate scientific research by running thousands of parallel experiments using AI, allowing a system to explore multiple approaches simultaneously. This approach has drawn comparisons with other high-profile AI startups, such as Ricursive Intelligence and Safe Superintelligence, which have also seen rapid valuation growth due to their founder pedigrees.
While it's unclear whether Discovery Loop will ultimately reach its $50 billion target, the startup's valuation jump reflects investors' willingness to pay a premium for companies with experienced founders in the AI space. Khosla Ventures has been a key player in this trend, investing heavily in researcher-led startups.
