Disney Admits The Mandalorian and Grogu Flopped at Box Office
Disney has admitted that The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed at the box office, but the company is trying to spin it as a success by highlighting other areas where the film generated revenue.
The live-action Star Wars movie had a reported $165 million production budget and a marketing spend of up to $300 million. Despite this, it only managed to gross $345.2 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever released.
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro argued that even though the film didn't meet box office expectations, it still drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise and drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. He also noted that the film led to significant engagement in gaming.
However, the numbers tell a different story. The Mandalorian and Grogu's box office performance was lackluster from the start, with a $177.7 million domestic opening and a total worldwide gross of just $345.2 million.
