Disney Aims for Amazon-Style Super App with Unified Membership Model
The Walt Disney Company is making a bold move to transform its digital landscape into a comprehensive membership system, reminiscent of Amazon Prime. CEO Josh D'Amaro has instructed senior executives to break down silos between Disney's streaming business and its physical offerings, including theme parks and cruises. The goal is to create a massive 'super app' that houses all these elements in one unified digital location.
Currently, Disney operates separate apps for its streaming service, Disneyland Resort, and Disney Cruise Line Navigator, each with different tech stacks and content rights structures. However, the new strategy aims to fold everything into one super app where users can easily book theme park tickets, watch movies, shop for merchandise, and play interactive games.
Disney+ Perks is a recent development that offers subscribers early access to exclusive merchandise, collectibles, event tickets, subscriber-only sweepstakes, digital rewards, in-game gifts, and high-value travel discounts. This initiative is seen as a testing ground for the premium membership model.
