Disney+ Aims for Super App Status with Games, Merchandise, and More
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro has ambitious plans for Disney+, aiming to turn it into a streaming 'super app' that combines games, merchandise, and other experiences with increased personalization and benefits for subscribers. In a memo to employees, D'Amaro stated that the supercharged Disney+ would deepen engagement, improve value proposition, lower churn, and increase lifetime fan value.
Media analysts are divided on whether this vision will succeed. Some, like Hernan Lopez of Owl & Co., believe that upselling experiences through Disney+ can drive higher revenue, citing the potential for a single day's theme park visit to generate more money than a year's worth of subscription fees. However, others are skeptical, pointing out that adding games and shopping features could create a cluttered and confusing experience.
Disney is looking to jumpstart its stagnant stock, which has declined 8% in the past 12 months while the S&P 500 has tripled. Building a more comprehensive Disney+ app could help the company achieve this goal, but it must avoid turning its beloved streamer into 'a digital shopping mall', as Forrester analyst Mike Proulx warns.
