Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro on Embracing Tech, Focusing on Storytelling
Josh D'Amaro, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, spoke at the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event about the future of the company. D'Amaro has been with Disney for over 30 years, starting as an entry-level position at Disneyland in 1998. He said it's still strange to be referred to as CEO after being a fan his entire life.
D'Amaro highlighted several key areas he considers important for the future of Disney. First and foremost is telling the world's best stories through films, attractions, and Broadway shows. He emphasized that this focus on quality storytelling must remain at the top level within the company.
The CEO also noted that the entertainment industry is currently at the intersection of technology and media, an area where Disney has historically thrived. D'Amaro expressed his desire to push forward by combining available technology with the company's expertise in storytelling.
When discussing the Walt Disney Company's position within the market, D'Amaro stated that other companies are attempting to emulate Disney's model by acquiring various assets and attempting to replicate its success. He believes Disney is uniquely positioned due to its vast collection of businesses, IP, global scale, and talent pool.
D'Amaro concluded his remarks by emphasizing the company's ability to operate as a cohesive unit across all its divisions, from theme parks to streaming services like Disney+, which he believes sets it apart from competitors.
