Disney Expands Streaming Strategy to Include More Short-Form Content and Local Originals
Disney is evolving its streaming strategy to cater to changing viewing habits. The company's vertical-video experience, Verts, has been successful on both ESPN and Disney+, with over 24 million users and 1.5 billion minutes of viewing since launching in August 2025.
The growth of short-form content is not seen as a replacement for long-form original content, but rather a supplement to it. Erin Teague, EVP of Product, Disney Entertainment & ESPN, said, 'There will never be a replacement for that long-form original content but what is interesting is the way that it is now being supplemented by the shorter-form analysis, the clips.'
Disney is also increasing its production of local originals for international audiences. The company plans to triple the number of local series available on Disney+ over the next three years, focusing on creating stories that reflect the culture and sensibilities of specific markets.
The integration of ESPN's sports content into Disney's streaming ecosystem will continue, with Formula E joining Disney+ and ESPN+ in December. U.S. Disney+ subscribers will also see select college football games and College GameDay simulcasts.
