Disney+ Loses Google Cast and AirPlay 2 in Patent Dispute
Disney+ has been forced to disable Google Cast (Chromecast) and AirPlay 2 in some countries due to a patent dispute with InterDigital. The latest ruling by the Unified Patent Court affects Disney's streaming service only in Germany and the Netherlands for now.
The patent dispute is escalating, and this marks the eighth injunction InterDigital has won against Disney since February 2025. Initially, in early September, Disney+ disabled Google Cast, but recent code reveals that AirPlay 2 is also being disabled. Users are met with an error message stating that these features are not available in their country.
Disney can choose to appeal or pay licensing fees to InterDigital to resolve the issue.
