Disney Offers Executives Early Retirement Packages Amid Cost-Cutting Plans

Disney is cutting costs by offering voluntary early retirement packages to its executives. The move is part of the company's larger efforts to reduce expenses and invest in areas that will drive future growth. According to a memo sent by Senior EVP and Chief People Officer Sonia Coleman, the Voluntary Early Retirement Offer (VERO) program will provide eligible executives with enhanced retirement packages, including separation pay, continued vesting of existing equity awards, healthcare support at active employee rates, and access to Disney theme parks. The offer is limited to U.S.-based employees in director through EVP levels within the Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and corporate divisions who meet specific eligibility criteria.

The company has been evaluating various cost-cutting measures following rounds of layoffs in April and July. In an earnings call earlier this month, CEO Josh D'Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston indicated that more layoffs and cost-reduction measures were forthcoming. The VERO program is a key part of these efforts to reduce costs and allocate resources towards strategic areas.

The offer will be available to employees who meet 65 points (calculated by age + years of service), with a minimum age of 50 and at least 10 years of service. Employees on contract are not eligible for the early retirement offer.
