Disney Picks Villainous Pete as Steelers Mascot
The Walt Disney Company's new NFL collection has sparked controversy among Pittsburgh Steelers fans after pairing their team with Pete, a villainous character from Disney's classic cartoons.
Pete was chosen as part of the Disney x Champion NFL collection, where each of the league's 32 teams was matched with a character from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars. The company explained that the selection was based on team history, fan traditions, city culture, and character storytelling.
In a statement, Disney described Pete as embodying the 'smash-mouth mentality' Steelers fans are known for, with his gruff personality and larger-than-life presence aligning with Pittsburgh's blue-collar attitude. However, not all fans agree, with some arguing that a more heroic figure would have been more fitting.
Bret Healey, director of graphic design at Disney Consumer Products, noted that spirited debate was part of the idea behind the project, as sports fans are known for passionately discussing every decision involving their teams.
