Disney Puts Faith in Holiday Releases for Black Panther 3 and Sci-Fi Sequels
Disney's December release window has proven crucial for box office success, and several sci-fi sequels have capitalized on this strategy. The latest addition to this lineup is Black Panther 3, which will hit theaters on December 15, 2028.
This decision marks a deliberate choice by Disney and Marvel Studios to time the release of their most anticipated film with the holiday rush, as many casual and devoted theater-goers have more free time during December. The studio has a history of releasing blockbuster franchises in this slot, including Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), which grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the global box office.
In fact, Marvel Studios' Avengers franchise is also joining this lineup with two films, Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2027) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027). The decision to slot both films into December slots will likely amplify their numbers despite criticism over the studio's recent track record.
Disney has consistently demonstrated that releasing sci-fi sequels in December can be a winning strategy. For example, Star Wars films have brought in just over $5.5 billion combined from releases such as The Force Awakens (2015), Rogue One (2016), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
