Disney Rents Rights to 'Bluey' for Theatrical Release
The Bluey Movie trailer premiered at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and it's a big deal. The film is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios, but there's an unusual twist - Disney doesn't own 'Bluey' outright. Instead, BBC Studios finances and licenses the picture.
This arrangement is rare for a property of this size. Typically, companies like Disney buy out popular brands to partner with them. But in this case, they're renting the rights instead. The numbers explain why: Bluey was the most-streamed program in the United States in 2025, with 45.2 billion minutes streamed.
The series' creator, Joe Brumm, writes and directs the film, which takes place across one action-packed day when a big surprise changes everything for Bluey and her family. The movie will be released exclusively in theaters on August 6, 2027.
The real question hanging over this is how the film's CGI animation will affect its tone and style. The series is known for its warm, 2D aesthetic, and switching to computer-generated imagery could change the emotional register of the show.
