Disney is reviving its oldest cartoon character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, with a nostalgic 2D animation style for his own mini-series on Disney+. The series will celebrate Oswald's return to the screen after over 80 years of obscurity. Originally created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927, Oswald was later sold to Universal Pictures due to a contract dispute.

However, Disney acquired the rights to Oswald in 2006, and now they are bringing him back to life with a three-part series written, directed, and executive produced by Jon Favreau. The new animation style will combine hand-drawn 2D animation with live-action elements, similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

The cast includes Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryder Allen, and Mykal-Michelle Harris. The series will be animated by veteran Disney animators and international studios such as SPA Studios, with live-action settings including Disneyland and Walt Disney's Burbank office.

Oswald is scheduled for release on Disney+ in February 2027, marking a significant return to traditional animation for the studio. Fans have been craving this style of animation since Disney's switch to 3D in the early 2000s.
