Disney Settles $50M Lawsuit Over Live TV Streaming Market Influence
The Walt Disney Company has agreed to settle a $50 million class action lawsuit without admitting liability. The settlement stems from allegations that Disney's control over popular channels and programming gave it outsized influence over the live TV streaming market.
For those who subscribed to YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2026, the deadline to file a claim is September 8. Eligible individuals can submit claims online or by mail, with payments distributed after a final approval hearing on January 14, 2027.
The lawsuit alleged that Disney's agreements with streamers required them to include ESPN in their base packages, giving Disney significant leverage over streaming bundle prices and limiting competitors' ability to offer lower-cost alternatives. The settlement will be reviewed by the court before payments are made.
