Disney Taps TikTok for New Era of Fan-Generated Content
Disney has agreed to let TikTok creators use clips from its films and TV shows in their videos, marking a significant shift in how fans engage with entertainment content. The deal, announced this week, will allow creators to use clips from franchises like Star Wars, Toy Story, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their videos.
The agreement follows the collapse of a $1 billion deal between Disney and OpenAI that would have allowed people to use its characters in AI-generated videos. That deal was cancelled when OpenAI shut down its video generation tool Sora in March.
Disney's chief marketing and brand officer, Asad Ayaz, said that 'fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways'. The company will launch a jointly-run programme with TikTok to boost creators' videos and give them access to exclusive events.
