Disney Unveils Ambitious Plans for Streaming, Sports, and Local Storytelling
At this year's D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney executives shared their vision for the future of streaming and entertainment. Erin Teague, EVP of Product at Disney Entertainment & ESPN, noted that while long-form original content remains essential, it can be supplemented by shorter formats like Verts, which has seen significant adoption on both Disney+ and ESPN's mobile app.
Disney plans to triple its local original series output on Disney+ over the next three years. This strategy involves partnering with local storytellers and regional partners to create culturally relevant content that appeals to specific audiences worldwide.
The company is also expanding its global sports strategy by combining ESPN's authority in sports with the reach of Disney+. This includes live streaming, AI-powered personalization, interactive viewing experiences, and a strategic global rights portfolio. The goal is to connect with younger and international fans through features like SportsCenter For You and StreamCenter.
