Disney Welcomes New Gorilla Leader Bakari Amid Critical Conservation Efforts
A new silverback gorilla named Bakari has joined Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando. The 21-year-old western lowland gorilla is set to lead the park's troop of critically endangered species, following the passing of beloved Gino last year.
Bakari comes from a fellow Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo, where he previously lived with other male gorillas. According to Rachel Daneault, animal care manager with Disney's Animals, Science and Environment, Bakari will play a critical role in the AZA's Species Survival Plan for gorillas.
The process of introducing Bakari to the troop is being done slowly, allowing him to feel comfortable and confident before closer interactions. Daneault stated that 'we want to ensure he's confident... we want him to feel comfortable, and what we're looking for is really calm, social behavior.'
Bakari's predecessor, Gino, fathered 14 offspring across multiple states over his lifetime. The new gorilla will be seen exploring his habitat along the park's Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
