Disney World Ditches Flat-Rate Entry as Peak Prices Skyrocket
Disney World has announced changes to its ticket pricing model, sparking debate over affordability and value. In a recent conference, Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston defended the company's date-based admission pricing, citing the need for higher prices on peak days due to increased demand.
According to Johnston, Disney's pricing philosophy is tied to the value it believes new attractions and experiences add for guests. He argued that the company takes price when it delivers additional value, pointing to park investment as justification.
The changes come as Disney World prepares major additions, including Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom, Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Tropical Americas at Disney's Animal Kingdom. However, some guests have expressed concern that the new pricing model will price them out of visiting during peak seasons.
Disney's financial results show a 3% increase in domestic-park attendance year-over-year, with per-capita spending rising 4%. The company has also reported a 10% increase in Experiences revenue and a 20% rise in segment operating income.
