Disney World Monorail Halts After Lightning Strike During Stormy Weather
A Walt Disney World monorail stopped in its tracks due to a reported lightning strike during stormy weather on September 8th. The train, carrying passengers from the Transportation and Ticket Center to EPCOT, stalled along an elevated beam when lightning apparently knocked out power somewhere along the route.
Passengers were stranded for approximately 90 minutes as Disney employees worked to resolve the issue. The air conditioning on the monorail failed, causing uncomfortable conditions inside the enclosed cars. To alleviate this, guests were instructed to remove window panels to increase ventilation.
Disney provided each affected guest with a $50 gift card after they were able to exit. The company did not confirm whether the incident prompted repairs, an investigation or operational changes to the monorail system.
