Disney's Adult Oasis Overwhelmed by Its Own Success
The Disney Destiny's launch marked a milestone in the company's evolution of adult-oriented experiences. The ship accommodates over 4,000 passengers and offers nine luxurious adult-only spaces, including cocktail bars and specialty restaurants.
A recent four-night cruise on the Disney Destiny was a mother-daughter getaway for one writer, who found that despite efforts to cater to adults, the ship's bar areas were often overcrowded and difficult to access.
The main issue lies in the design of adult-only spaces, which are intentionally intimate and immersive but small in size. This creates a bottleneck when it comes to popular entertainment offerings, such as De Vil's, the 101 Dalmatians-themed cocktail lounge.
Disney Imagineering designers acknowledged that families are at the heart of their ship design, and the goal is to create elevated experiences for adults while still connecting them with family areas. However, this approach has led to space restraints in adult-only spaces.
