Disney's Ambitious Villains Land Expansion Takes Shape
Disney's Villains Land at Magic Kingdom is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious expansions in recent memory. The project, which was first announced at D23 2024, has been gaining momentum ever since. Recently, Disney revealed more details about the land's original story and attractions.
The heart of Villains Land's narrative revolves around a corrupted Wishing Well that has sent poisoned magic spreading throughout the forest. This dark power has attracted Disney's villains, who have arrived hoping to claim whatever magic remains. They've used that power to conjure enormous fortresses, palaces, and lairs designed around their individual personalities.
One of the two major attractions will be a roller coaster built around Maleficent, featuring elements never before attempted on similar rides. The other headliner will be a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror, where guests will encounter numerous Disney Villains in a supernatural realm created through physical sets and special effects.
Disney Imagineers have been drawing inspiration from classic Walt Disney Animation Studios characters while developing an original fairytale story for Villains Land. They've used Art Nouveau and Modernisme as architectural styles, resulting in 'Conjured Architecture', structures meant to look as though villains created them through corrupted magic.
The land's scale is comparable to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, allowing Imagineers to create a complete world rather than just adding attractions to one corner of the park. Disney has hinted that Villains Land will be much more than just villain-themed rides, aiming to become its own corrupted fairytale world.
