Disney's Iconic Aquatopia Ride Closes After 25 Years
Aquatopia, an opening-day attraction at Tokyo DisneySea, will permanently close on September 14. The ride, which opened on September 4, 2001, was one of Walt Disney Imagineering's earliest attempts to build a trackless ride system.
Trackless technology is now used in many Disney attractions, including Rise of the Resistance and Pooh's Hunny Hunt. Aquatopia was a proving ground for this technology, and its closure marks the end of an era for Tokyo DisneySea.
The land where Aquatopia sat will be redeveloped as part of Oriental Land Company's 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy. The new plan includes a large show building in place of the ride, but no theme, attraction lineup, or opening date has been announced.
