Nvidia's DLSS 5 AI tech has sparked controversy in the gaming community after leaked footage showed it altering character appearances and causing performance drops. Some gamers have expressed disappointment with the technology, citing issues with facial features and skin textures.

DLSS 5 was initially touted by Nvidia as a means to bring 'photorealism' to gaming through its generative AI model. However, early demos sparked controversy when they gave a character in Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem an exaggerated makeover.

Despite the backlash, some modders have found positive aspects of DLSS 5, particularly in its ability to enhance environments and reflections in games like Ubisoft's Avatar. Nvidia has not yet released the official version of DLSS 5 and is assumed to be limited to the current RTX 50 series of GPUs.

Some developers disagree with the criticism, arguing that DLSS 5 does not alter the geometry of models or character appearance. Daniel Vávra, developer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, claims that the tech can actually help overcome issues caused by game engine limitations and improve rendering of shadows in hair.
