DOJ Targets Major Retailers in Expanded Beef Price Probe
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has expanded its antitrust investigation into beef prices to include eight major grocery retailers. The probe, which began earlier with an examination of the 'Big Four' meatpackers controlling over 85% of beef processing, now targets Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize, Costco, and Amazon.
The investigation aims to determine whether retail-level practices contribute to rising beef prices, a concern for consumers. The DOJ is reviewing millions of documents and interviewing industry players, with whistleblower rewards offered in an effort to gather more information.
This move aligns with broader concerns about food security and shrinking cattle supplies in the US, as well as political efforts to address meat industry monopolies.
