Dollar Under Threat: JPMorgan Warns of Consequences of US Economic and Military Decline
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has warned of a potential threat to the US dollar's status as a reserve currency due to the country's weakening economic and military power.
In an interview with PBS, Dimon stated that if the US fails to maintain its position as both a leading military and economic power, it may lose its status as the issuer of the world's reserve currency.
This is in line with comments made by Daniel McDowell, deputy director of the Moynihan Institute for Global Affairs at Syracuse University, who noted that the economy is the foundation of the dollar's position, while military power is an additional factor.
A strong military enhances the appeal of the US currency, as it signals to foreign investors that their assets in the US are secure, according to McDowell. A weakening of the country's military position could reduce allies' willingness to buy US Treasury bonds and invest in the United States.
